BRIDGE in capitals, and under it LONDON PARIS NEW YORK: this is a Bridge pot, a straight pipe in sandblasted finish on a tapered vulcanite stem.
The stem ends in a fishtail mouthpiece, and there is no filter. It is pre-smoked, in very good condition. BRIDGE and LONDON PARIS NEW YORK read clearly in the close-up; a third line below them is worn at its start and ends in BRUYERE.
THE MARKS
- BRIDGE stamped on the shank
- LONDON PARIS NEW YORK stamped on the shank
- a third line ending in BRUYERE, worn at its start (the first word looks like GARANTIE but cannot be read in full)
A pot is a short, wide bowl with straight sides, set on a straight shank. This one is almost as wide as it is tall - 43 mm high and 40 mm across - with a 33 mm deep chamber, and the vulcanite stem tapers evenly from the shank to the fishtail bit. At 151 mm long and 42 grams it is a full-size pipe with a light hand.
The finish is a sandblast all over the bowl and shank. Sandblasting removes the softer wood between the growth rings and leaves the harder rings standing as a textured surface, which gives the bowl a rugged feel in the hand. The stamps sit on a smoother panel of the shank.
No date is given for this pipe.
Condition: pre-smoked, in very good condition.
