Cellini Original in script on the shank: this is a Cellini calabash, a bent pipe in smooth finish with a few carved rustic touches, on a vulcanite saddle stem.
The saddle stem ends in a fishtail mouthpiece, and there is no filter. The stamp is small and soft in the side photograph, but Cellini and Original can be made out.
THE MARKS
- Cellini / Original (in script) stamped on the shank
The calabash shape takes its name from the gourd pipe, and like the gourd, a calabash bowl usually flares outward toward the rim. On this pipe the bowl is tall - 61 mm high and 44 mm wide - with a deep 50 mm chamber.
The finish is smooth, with birdseye grain showing on the side of the bowl. The decoration is a few carved rustic channels rather than an all-over rustication: one curves low across the side of the bowl, and a carved patch runs along the back of the bowl and onto the shank. The rim is smooth.
No date is given for this pipe.
Condition: previously smoked, in very good condition.
