About this Piece
Cellini in flowing script, ORIGINAL beneath it in capitals, stamped on the side of the shank of a pipe cut from one block of briar. This is a Cellini Original freehand: smooth briar with plateau left on the rim and on the wide face of the shank, a bent vulcanite tapered stem with a fishtail bit, pre-smoked and in excellent condition.
It is a master piece. The block was chosen for its grain, and the wide surfaces of the bowl carry vertical grain, cross grain and birdseye. It carries no filter.
THE MARKS

A freehand is not cut to a fixed chart. The carver follows the block, letting the grain and the natural outer edge of the briar decide the lines, so no two are the same. Here the wide surface of the bowl shows the grain over a large area, and the shank ends in a wide plateau face at the stem. The bent tapered stem narrows evenly from the shank to the bit, and the fishtail at the tip spreads the draw across the tongue rather than sending it in one narrow stream.
Plateau is the rough, natural top of the briar block, the part that grew just under the bark. A carver who leaves it in place keeps the original surface of the burl as part of the design, and on this pipe it crowns the rim and covers the wide face of the shank where the stem enters. Its rugged texture stands against the smooth briar of the rest of the bowl.
The grain is what this pipe is about. Vertical, or straight, grain shows as lines running up the bowl; cross grain shows as lines running across a face; and birdseye appears as small dots where the same growth rings are cut end-on. Seeing all three on one stummel tells you how the block was turned to show them. Please see the photographs, which say more than words can.
