DR HARDY over PISA, stamped on a smooth area of the shank: this is a rusticated bent billiard with smooth panels on both sides of the bowl, on a vulcanite tapered stem with a fishtail mouthpiece.
It takes a 9 mm filter, and it is pre-smoked, in good condition. The stamp reads in both lines, with the A of HARDY faint.
THE MARKS
- DR HARDY in capitals, stamped on the shank
- PISA in capitals, stamped under it
No date is given for this pipe.
The billiard is the classic pipe shape: a bowl shaped like a cylinder, set on a shank. This one is bent, and the bowl is 49 mm high and 39 mm wide around a chamber 20 mm across and 37 mm deep. The pipe is 144 mm long and weighs 56 g. The vulcanite stem tapers from the shank to the fishtail mouthpiece, and the shank is bored for a 9 mm filter.
A rustic finish is carved into the surface of the bowl with tools. On this pipe the carving covers the bowl and the shank, while two smooth panels on the sides of the bowl and the smooth stamp area on the shank show the plain briar.
