Peterson Kapruf 53 Sandblast Short Lovat Vulcanite Saddle Stem P-Lip Estate Pipe

PETERSON'S over KAPRUF, MADE IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND in three short lines, and the shape number 53: this is a Peterson Kapruf 53, a short Lovat in a craggy sandblast, with the P of Peterson on its vulcanite saddle stem and a P-Lip bit.

It is a straight pipe. Every line of the stamp is clear and easy to read, on a smoother stretch of the shank close to the stem.

Grafton Street in Dublin runs through Peterson's history. The maker's own catalogue of about 2010 dates the Kapp Brothers' shop to 1865, the Peterson System to 1890 and the Peterson Lip to 1898. The partnership is on record in 1894, when Alfred Henry Kapp, Christian G. B. Kapp and Charles Peterson, pipe manufacturers and tobacconists of Grafton Street, went to court against a Dublin tobacconist for copying Charles Peterson's patent pipe - the pipe "known as Kapp's pipe or Peterson's pipe" - and were granted a perpetual injunction.

Two years later the firm's catalogue, printed under the name Kapp & Peterson Ltd, named "Peterson's Patent No. 9059" and announced: "our latest improvement is an upright bore on the upper part of the lip of the mouthpiece". That bore is the lip later known as the P-Lip, the bit this pipe carries. By the time of the catalogue of about 2010 the factory stood at Sallynoggin and the shop at 117 Grafton Street.

On the official Peterson shape chart, 53 belongs to the Classic Range, and a shape chart published by GQ Tobaccos names it a Lovat. A Lovat is a straight pipe with a round, upright bowl, a long round shank and a short saddle stem; this one is a short Lovat. The P-Lip at the end of the stem has its opening on the top of the bit, angled upward, instead of straight out at the end - the "upright bore" of the 1896 catalogue.

The finish is a sandblast: the blast cuts away the softer wood and leaves the harder grain standing in a rough, craggy texture across the bowl and the shank. Please see the photographs for the texture.

For dating, the words MADE IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND matter. The country's name changed from Irish Free State (1922) to Eire (1937) and to Republic of Ireland (1949), and Peterson stamps follow those names, so this stamp places the pipe in 1949 or later. No other mark on it gives a narrower date.
