Real Briar, in a flowing script, is stamped on the shank. This is a nice straight sandblast pipe in the cutty rhodesian style, with a tapered vulcanite stem that ends in a fishtail bit. It takes no filter.
It is pre-smoked and in very good condition.
The pipe carries no maker's name. "Real Briar" is a stamp that tells the buyer what the bowl is made of: briar, the hard root burl of the tree heath, which has been the standard wood for pipes since the nineteenth century. Without a maker's name we give no maker story and no date.
THE MARKS
- Real Briar, in script, stamped on the shank
The round, tall bowl sits on a straight shank, in the cutty rhodesian style. It is 155 mm long, with a bowl 45 mm high and 32 mm wide. The chamber is 18 mm across and 43 mm deep, so it is narrow and deep for its size. The pipe is light in the hand, at 26 g.
The tapered vulcanite stem narrows from the shank toward a flat fishtail bit. When the stem is out, a metal tube can be seen on its tenon (see the photos).
The bowl and the shank carry a sandblast finish. A sandblast is made by blasting the shaped bowl, so the softer wood wears away and the harder growth rings stand up, and no two blasts come out the same.
