PORTO CERVO over SAVINELLI on a smooth panel, and 806 on the other side, set into a field of dark, glossy rustication. This is a Savinelli Porto Cervo 806: a straight Lumberman, rusticated, with a brass accent at the shank end and a short saddle stem, pre-smoked and in very good vintage condition.
Porto Cervo is a small resort town on the northern coast of Sardinia, home to fewer than five hundred people and known for luxury yachts and grand hotels; its Hotel Cala di Volpe appears in the 1977 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. Savinelli named this line after it and dressed it to match: a glossy, dark-stained rustication, trim brass accents, and smooth, polished briar at the rim and at the end of the shank.
The Savinelli story begins behind a shop counter. In 1876 Achille Savinelli opened a tobacco shop in Milan, and in 1890 his son Carlo took it over and ran it for some fifty years. Pipe making came later: in 1948 Achille Savinelli the younger started the family's own pipe production in the Varese region. Pipedia names Amleto Pome and Mario Vettoruzzo as his partners, while pipephil describes a partnership with Enea Buzzi at Brebbia; the two accounts stand side by side. In 1953 the two houses went separate ways, Brebbia carried on as its own brand, and Savinelli set up its own factory at Molina di Barasso. Savinelli pipes have been made in Italy ever since, now under the fourth generation of the family.
THE MARKS
- PORTO CERVO / SAVINELLI stamped on the smooth panel of the shank
- 806 stamped on the other side
- ITALY, as noted when the pipe came in (not visible in the photographs)
The 806 is Savinelli's take on the classic Lumberman. A Lumberman sets a billiard bowl on a long straight shank and finishes with a short stem, so the bowl stands out when the pipe is seen from the side. The 806 follows the lines of Savinelli's 803 KS and 803 EX, but in clearly smaller proportions throughout: the classically shaped bowl runs into a slightly long, oval shank and a short saddle stem. In Savinelli's catalogue, KS marks King Size and EX Extraordinaire, the larger sizes of a shape. For a smoker who likes the Lumberman but wants a handier, more versatile pipe, the 806 is the natural choice.
Rustication is a finish carved into the briar with a tool, leaving a deep, rugged texture of ridges and hollows instead of a smooth surface. It gives the hand a firm grip, and the larger surface area helps the bowl shed heat. On the Porto Cervo the rustication is stained dark and polished to a gloss, and it is broken by smooth, polished briar at the rim and at the shank end, where the brass accent sits against the stem.
The shape number helps place the pipe. Savinelli used four-digit shape numbers on its early pipes and later moved to three digits, so a three-digit number like 806 belongs to the later system. Our sources give no dates for the Porto Cervo line itself.
Condition: Pre-smoked, in very good vintage condition. Please see the photographs.
