SAVINELLI, MILANO - ITALY: the paper label under the base reads clearly. This is a collectable, old-fashioned Savinelli tobacco jar in wood, with a rubber ring around the cap to keep the humidity in for the tobacco.
It is a round jar with a fitted lid. The underside of the lid carries a raised rubber ring, which sits into the mouth of the jar when it is closed. The wood is smooth, with close grain lines running up the sides.
The Savinelli name starts with a shop, not a pipe workshop. Achille Savinelli opened a tobacco shop in Milan in 1876, and from 1890 his son Carlo ran it for about fifty years. Pipe making came later: in 1948 Achille Savinelli Jr. began producing pipes in the Varese region. Accounts differ on his first partners - Pipedia names Amleto Pome and Mario Vettoruzzo, while pipephil describes an association with Enea Buzzi at Brebbia. In 1953 Savinelli and Buzzi went their own ways, and Brebbia continued as a brand of its own. Savinelli production has stayed in Italy throughout, and the family is now in its fourth generation with Giancarlo Savinelli. The word MILANO on this label is the city where the story began.
