About this Piece
VANGUARD arched over DE LUXE, and REAL BRIAR FF and 6H: this is a Vanguard De Luxe long straight billiard in a smooth finish, new old stock.
The vulcanite stem is tapered and ends in a fishtail mouthpiece, with no filter.
THE MARKS
- VANGUARD in capitals, arched over DE LUXE, stamped on the shank
- REAL BRIAR FF in capitals, stamped on the shank
- 6H in capitals, stamped on the shank
REAL BRIAR is the stamp's own word for the wood. What FF and 6H stand for is not known, and no date is given for this pipe.
A billiard is the classic pipe shape: a bowl shaped like a cylinder, set on a straight shank. This one is long - 158 mm from end to end, with a bowl 50 mm high and 32 mm wide around a chamber 19 mm across and 44 mm deep. The stem tapers from the shank to the fishtail bit.
The finish is smooth on the bowl and the shank, and grain lines show.
Condition: new old stock with signs of long storage; it will need more cleaning to remove all dust and smells.
